Scalp Conditions and Scalp Health
Many people worry about taking care of their hair but neglected the health of the scalp. There are several disorders that affect the scalp. Some conditions are just minor irritants, but others are more serious and may be painful. Some common conditions that affect the scalp are: dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, contact dermatitis, and seborrhea and many of these conditions cause itchy scalp, flaky scalp and scalp redness to name a few scalp problems.
Everyone has heard of dandruff. It is the most common scalp condition. Mild forms of dandruff are annoying with some itching and scalp flaking. More serious dandruff conditions causes flakes to clump together and form oily mounds on the scalp.
Contact dermatitis is caused by an irritation or allergic reaction on the scalp. This often comes from chemicals in shampoos, conditioners, hair dyes, relaxers and perms.
Seborrheic dermatitis causes itching and flaking and greasy yellowish scales to form on the scalp. This is a very itchy condition, but scratching may cause infection to occur. Babies often get seborrheic dermatitis and it is called cradle cap. Cradle cap usually goes away on its own within a few months. In adults however seborrheic dermatitis is chronic and must be treated regularly.
Psoriasis is also a chronic condition. It affects the scalp as well as other parts of the body. It can occur on arms and legs and even effect joints. Psoriasis produces scales on the scalp that are powder and look white or silvery.
A very greasy scalp may be caused by seborrhea. This condition occurs when the sebum gland is overproducing oil on the scalp. This condition occurs often in adolescence and tends to lessen with age. With seborrhea the hair is usually very oily too.
